I think all the talk of the melting point of steel, or the failure of the air force to get involved in 'intercepting' hijacked airplanes is easily refuted. I am tempted to follow Alexander Cockburn, and dismiss the '9/11 Truth Movement' as a disastrous diversion which has helped defeat resistance to war.

Here, Denis Rancourt, a 9/11 truther, wonders why people he otherwise admires have 'actively avoided', 'demeaned' and 'ridiculed' the 9/11 skeptics. Denis - I understand quite well why Cockburn et al. have poured scorn on the ideas of David Ray Griffin and the rest of the 9/11 truth industry. It's because they think his ideas are fucking stupid.

Cockburn made a big mistake when he claimed that one of the reasons 9/11 truthers don't believe the official story is they can't believe that 'Arabs' are smart enough to have gotten through US security. This falls into the same trap as the 9/11 truthers themselves - assuming you are right, and then looking for the motives of those who disagree:

Listen, Denis, I have had the experience of being mobbed by ridicule on the 9/11 whodunnit question - being ridiculed by people with ideas like yours! Worse, I have found many 9/11 truth supporters to be so stuck in the circular logic of conspiracy, they think failure to believe their theory is evidence of something suspicious.

No - most of the 'intelligentsia' (Denis's word)  think there is hardly any chance that the US government was involved in the disaster because, using our brains, basic science, and Occam's razor, we have found that by far the most economical explanation is that bin Laden's organization carried out the attacks without US government knowledge or involvement.

Worse than ridicule is the response of president Obama to the president of Iran's recent remark that September 11th. was an inside job. He described Ahmadinejad's remarks as 'hateful and offensive'. How typical of America's culture of political correctness. I don't care if the 9/11 Truth hypothesis is hateful and offensive, I care whether it is the simplest explanation of the facts. I happen to believe it is not, but I don't attack those who do believe it as hateful.
