'All the mascots are white' by Jay Knott (03/04/12) ⇌ (Irony)
Comment in Daily Telegraph on Spurs/Man U match 4 March 2012: '"The mascots are all Caucasian, yet again. Kick racism out of football? What a joke," writes Liverpool1892fc'.
The guy has no sense of history. The ultra-pc attitudes which dominate football today are the result of embourgeoisement - replacing the standing terraces with more expensive seats, changing the average fan from white working class to white middle class. This was one of the results of the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, in which ninety-six Liverpool fans died as a result of police incompetence. Margaret Thatcher's government and Rupert Murdoch's newspapers blamed the fans, and the working-class atmosphere was replaced by a less rowdy one. Hence the complaints about 'racism'.
It wasn't like that in my day. You know what? I'm beginning to sound like a grumpy old curmudgeon.
