Liverpool FC have responded brilliantly to the fine and the eight-match ban on their star player. They will not contest it, implying that they do not trust the FA to do the right thing. They accuse Patrice Evra of dishonestly playing the race card. They defend their man. Their only mistake is to reiterate their commitment to combat 'racism in sport'. That's not the job of a football team. Its job is to win the league, and the FA have now made that impossible.
