An interesting Zionist writer who claims to stand for Western values by Jay Knott (07/16/10)       ⇌ (Israel and the US)

I thought she was just a hasbara hackette, but Melanie Phillips of The Telegraph and The Spectator makes some good points about the left. She is a climate change sceptic. She challenges the reader:

"It was Christianity and the Hebrew Bible that gave us our concepts of reason, progress and an orderly world - the foundations of science and modernity."

Notice she lumps the Old and New Testament - 'God hates you' and 'God loves you' - together. And she reveals her sectarian agenda:

'Thus the West is losing both its rationality and its freedoms. It is succumbing to a "soft totalitarianism," which not only is creating an ugly mood of intolerance but is undermining its ability to defend itself against Islamic aggression.'

So - if we are able to discuss 'Islamic aggression' so tactlessly - surely Melanie would have no objection to someone asking where this 'soft totalitarianism' came from? Let's say I'm an atheist, in favor of 'rationality' and 'freedoms'. I have to accept religions, such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam, exist. According to Melanie, I should love the first two, and hate the third. To me, that seems a bit arbitrary. But not to her. For her, its a strategy for defending Israel by using Christians to fight Muslims. And 'soft totalitarianism' is an equivalent left-wing strategy. Sorry to be so blunt, but she's no shrinking violet herself, and that is the most economic explanation of her apparently arbitrary religious preferences.
