Former dictator Montt has been found guilty of 'genocide' because the court decided he tried to wipe out the Ixil ethnic minority. He was guilty of numerous crimes against Guatemalans, particularly native ones. Despite the exaggerations of some of these natives, such as Nobel Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú, our picture of the eighties in Central America is roughly correct.
